Ibiza and the Spirit of the Hippies
Long before Ibiza became known for its beach clubs and nightlife, the island was a haven for free spirits from around the world. In the late 1950s and especially throughout the 1960s and 1970s, thousands of hippies arrived on Ibiza in search of a simpler, more authentic way of life.
Many came from Northern Europe, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and the United States. Drawn by Ibiza’s natural beauty, peaceful atmosphere and low cost of living, they settled in rural fincas, lived close to nature and embraced values such as freedom, creativity, community and self-expression.
The hippie movement left a lasting mark on the island. Artists, musicians, craftsmen and dreamers helped shape Ibiza’s unique identity. Famous hippie markets such as Las Dalias and Punta Arabí emerged during this period and continue to attract visitors today.
While modern Ibiza has evolved considerably, traces of its bohemian soul can still be found in hidden coves, local markets, yoga retreats, artisan workshops and the island’s relaxed lifestyle.
The spirit at Blue Hill House

Legend has it (and this is not just a local legend; it is also documented in the records of the town hall and in the notarial deeds) that nearly ten years after the house had been completed, the owner of the land finally appeared and said: “You do realize that you have built a house on my land? Only then — almost a decade after the house was built — did the original builder purchase the land and officially become its owner. Visiting a hippie market
Much of the original hippie spirit has been lost among today’s visitors to the famous hippie markets. Of course, we do not expect tourists to adopt the hippie lifestyle, but showing a little respect for the ideas and values that inspired these markets can certainly do no harm.
